7 Keys on Planning an Affordable Wedding

These are the secrets to throwing a fantastic wedding on a realistic budget.
  1. Fight the power! Reject the dogma of bridal websites that demand you must spend a king's ransom to tie the knot. Plan the wedding you want, not the one the Wedding industrial Complex says you should have.
  2. Surf your way to savings on the web. How? Get discount price quotes on dresses, order flowers at wholesale and uncover hard-to-find info on venues, photographers and more.
  3. Dicker. Negotiate the price of products/services to get what you need, not what the merchant wants to sell you. It's surprising how flexible vendors can be, especially for weddings at off-peak times.
  4. Get it in writing. All those sweet promises of discount deals are nothing if you don't get them in writing. And get it in black and white BEFORE you place any deposit.
  5. Plan in advance. Leave enough time to comparison shop several merchants - you'll be shocked at how much difference there can be in prices. And many items for a wedding must be special-ordered. Planning in advance lets you  avoid rush fees.
  6. Do your homework first. Before you go out shopping, research what you want (and don't want) for your wedding and reception. Learn the questions to ask and pitfalls to avoid before you hit the streets.
  7. Get creative. Many wedding bargains require some out-of-the-box thinking - booking an unusual reception site, finding a photo album online, printing your invitations on a computer. The bottom line: you don't have to compromise on quality to have an affordable wedding.
